Music to focus by.

Pick what you're working on and get one long, unbroken queue of dreamy chillwave and ambient downtempo, picked from the audio for that task: softer for reading, steadier for deep work, fuller for code. Set a session length and the music fades out when you're done.

Start now: one tap plays a queue

§01Session

What are you working on?

Choose a task. The lamp swings to it and loads a long-play queue, drawn below as one session ruler: every segment is a full track, sized by its real length. Pick a session length, press start, and leave it alone.

Deep work

The steadiest tracks in the catalogue: a mid-tempo pulse, medium loudness and almost no sudden changes, so nothing pulls you out of a hard problem.

Tempo≈66–99 BPM
Softnessmostly full
Steadinessvery steady
Brightnessbalanced
Good for
Strategy, analysis, problem sets, planning, design work, anything that needs one long stretch of attention.
Leaves out
Big builds, drops and very bright tracks. They're great music, just not for this.

§02Guide

What is the best music for focusing?

There's no single best track, but there is a pattern. Five things decide whether music helps you concentrate or quietly pulls you away.

The short answer

Instrumental music with a steady pulse, at a moderate volume, that you like but don't love too much, matched to the energy of the task and played in one long session instead of short bursts.

  1. 01

    Instrumental

Words compete with words. Lyrics are processed as language even when you're not listening to them, which is exactly what reading and writing need. Every track here is instrumental.

  2. 02

    Steady

No surprises. Sudden drops, builds and quiet-to-loud jumps grab attention the way a notification does. The queues favour tracks whose loudness barely moves, measured from the waveform.

  3. 03

    Moderate

Background, not foreground. Quiet enough that you could hear someone say your name. A soft, warm sound masks a noisy room without becoming the thing you listen to.

  4. 04

    Matched

Energy to the task. Reading wants the softest, slowest music; coding and deep work can take a fuller groove; email and chores like something brighter. That's why there are six queues, not one playlist.

  5. 05

    Long

One take, not sprints. Every skip is a tiny context switch. Pick a session length, press start, and let one long queue run until the dimmer fades it out.

Listen long (this site)

  • One queue, one session, no interruptions.
  • The music changes with the task, not the clock.
  • The session dimmer fades out at the end; take a break whenever you like.
  • Best for deep work, reading, writing and anything that takes a while to get into.

Work in sprints (pomodoro)

  • 25-minute blocks with 5-minute breaks.
  • Great for getting started when you're procrastinating, and for routine tasks.
  • Breaks can cut a deep session off just as you get into it.
  • The clock decides when you stop, not the work.

§05Use it

Free to use, with credit.

Making a study-with-me video, a focus stream or a productivity app? All of this music is free under CC BY 4.0. Here are the rules in full.

Free to use, with credit

  • All social media. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and the rest, including monetised videos, study-with-me streams, Shorts and Reels.
  • Other projects too. Podcasts, games, apps, ads, client work, school projects and background music in businesses.
  • Edit it to fit. Cut, loop or fade tracks for your project, and say it's edited in the credit.
  • Credit Purrple Cat. “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0”.

Never

  • Never re-upload or release it on streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer or Tidal, through a distributor or any other route.
  • Never release remixes, samples or covers of it on streaming services either.
  • Never register it in Content ID or claim other people's videos with it.
  • Never pass it off as your own or sell the tracks as they are.

Why so strict about streaming? Re-uploads, remixes, samples and covers on Spotify, Apple Music and other services get fingerprinted, and then false Content ID claims hit everyone who uses the music properly. Purrple Cat Self Releases have no Content ID, so there's nothing to clear when you use them as intended.

§06FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is the best music for focusing?
For most people and most tasks: instrumental music with a steady pulse, played at a moderate volume, that you find pleasant but not gripping. Lyrics compete with reading and writing, sudden changes in loudness pull your attention, and music you love too much becomes the thing you focus on. Then match the energy to the task: softer and slower for reading, steadier and a little fuller for coding or deep work, brighter for routine jobs. Each queue on this site is built that way.
Is lofi good for studying and concentration?
It suits a lot of people, for the same reasons above: it's instrumental, repetitive in a good way and usually mid-tempo with few surprises. It isn't magic and it doesn't work for everyone, and research on background music and concentration is genuinely mixed. Try a full session with the Studying queue and compare it with silence; your own results matter more than any rule.
Should focus music have lyrics?
Usually not, especially for reading, writing and anything with words. Your brain processes lyrics as language even when you aren't trying to listen. Everything on this site is instrumental.
What tempo is best for focus?
There's no magic number. A steady pulse matters more than the exact tempo, and tempo estimates can be off by half or double. Measured from the audio, most tracks in these queues sit around 66–99 BPM for deep work, 65–99 BPM for studying, 65–92 BPM for reading, 65–92 BPM for writing, 76–117 BPM for coding, 89–123 BPM for light tasks. Slower and softer suits reading; a little quicker suits coding and routine jobs.
How loud should focus music be?
Quieter than you think: loud enough to cover background noise, quiet enough that you could still hear someone say your name. If you notice the music more than your work, turn it down before you change the track.
Is this a pomodoro timer?
No. This site is about choosing the right music for the task and listening long. The session timer never interrupts you with breaks; it just fades the music out when your session is over. If you like working in pomodoro sprints with breaks, pair it with any timer you like and pause the player for your breaks.
Are these the full tracks? Can I download them?
Yes. Every player plays the whole track, and every track has a free MP3 download (192 kbps, tagged with the title, album and licence). Each focus queue can also be downloaded as an .m3u8 playlist for VLC or any desktop player.
Can I use this music in my study-with-me videos and streams?
Yes. All of it is free under CC BY 4.0, on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, Facebook, X and all other social media, including monetised videos and long study streams. Credit it with: “Music: Purrple Cat (purrplecat.com), licensed under CC BY 4.0”. Purrple Cat Self Releases have no Content ID, so there's nothing to clear.
Can I upload it to Spotify or other streaming services?
No. Never re-upload or release the music, or remixes, samples or covers of it, on Spotify, Apple Music or any other streaming service. Those uploads get fingerprinted and cause false Content ID claims for everyone who uses the music properly.
How were the queues picked?
From the audio itself. Every track was measured for tempo, loudness, brightness (how much high-frequency energy it has) and steadiness (how much its loudness moves around). Each mode scores the whole catalogue against its own rules, adds the album's mood, skips the spooky albums, limits how many tracks come from one album and orders the result so neighbouring tracks feel alike.
What does the music sound like?
Dreamy chillwave and ambient downtempo lofi by Purrple Cat: soft piano, warm synth pads, deep sub-bass and slow, steady grooves. Fully instrumental.
Does this site track me?
No. No cookies, analytics or ads. Your volume, session length and today's listening total are saved only in your own browser.
